Relevance to Social Studies

Social Studies is a subject that is very broad and it incorporates lots of different subjects such as Geography, History and citizenship building. All of which interact with intellectual property in different ways.

Geography
From the standpoint of Geography it is important to heed copyright laws, because you will often be using data and maps that someone else has created. If you were to research birth rates in Canada from 2000-2010 this data would have been put together by someone specific. If you do not follow the copyright laws for these documents you will face severe punishment.

History
In history we read a vast amount of historical works and textbooks. Obviously if you are quoting and using these works in research papers and historical essays, it is essential to give the credit to the author or creator. If the student doesn't attribute the work to the correct person they will in effect be claiming the work and research as  their own intellectual property.

Citizenship Building
One of the most important roles of Social Studies is building good citizens. To build good citizens it is important that they know the laws of their country. Copyright laws are very important to Canada and the world as whole.

It is important to teach Intellectual Property and Copyright laws in Social Studies because it invades every part of the subject. Not only that but it is important as teachers that we protect our students as much as possible. In order to do that it is imperative that they learn about the Copyright laws of their country
